Percentage Calculator
The Percentage Calculator answers two everyday questions: what percent a part is of a whole, and how much a given percent equals in dollars — handy for discounts, budgets and growth.
What this means
A percentage is a fraction out of 100. 'What percent is 25 of 200?' means 25 ÷ 200 × 100 = 12.5%. 'What is 12% of 200?' means 200 × 12% = 24.
How we calculate it
Formula
Percent = part ÷ whole × 100; amount = total × percent.Worked example
20 correct answers out of 25 questions, and 15% of a $400 total:
- 1Percent = 20 ÷ 25 × 100 = 80%
- 2Amount = 400 × 15% = $60
Important assumptions
- The whole must be greater than zero for the percent question.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 'percent of' ambiguous?
Because it can ask either direction: what percent a part is of a whole, or the dollar amount a percent represents. This calculator handles both with two fields.
When do I use each result?
Use 'what percent' for grades, shares and progress. Use 'percent of total' for discounts, tips and allocations.
