Percentage Increase Calculator

The Percentage Increase Calculator measures how much a value grew, in percent, between an original and a new number — for example a salary raise, a price hike or population growth — and shows the exact amount of the increase.

What this means

Percentage increase tells you the growth relative to where you started. A rise from 100 to 120 is a 20% increase, because 20 is 20% of the original 100.

How we calculate it

Formula

Increase % = (New − Original) ÷ |Original| × 100.

Worked example

A salary goes from $50,000 to $55,000:

  1. 1Increase = 55,000 − 50,000 = 5,000
  2. 25,000 ÷ 50,000 = 0.10
  3. 30.10 × 100 = 10% increase

Important assumptions

  • Both values must be positive for a meaningful percent increase.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 10% increase?

Multiply the original value by 1.10. For 200, that gives 220.

What if the new value is lower than the original?

Then it is a percentage decrease. Use the Percentage Decrease Calculator instead.
