Ideal Weight Calculator

Estimate your ideal weight from your height and sex using four classic medical formulas: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. Ideal weight is a guideline, not a target — healthy bodies come in a range of weights.

What this means

Ideal body weight formulas predict a reference weight for a given height and sex. They were developed for medication dosing, so treat them as a range rather than an exact prescription.

How we calculate it

Formula

Base weight for 60 inches plus 2.3 (Devine), 1.9 (Robinson), 1.41 (Miller) or 2.7 (Hamwi) kg per extra inch.

Worked example

A woman 165 cm tall:

  1. 1165 cm = 65 inches (5'5")
  2. 2Robinson: 49 + 1.7×5 = 57.5 kg
  3. 3Devine: 45.5 + 2.3×5 = 57 kg

Important assumptions

  • Formulas assume an average build and do not account for frame size or muscle.

Frequently asked questions

What is my ideal weight for my height?

A healthy range, not a single number. Use the BMI healthy range as the broad target; the formulas give a narrower estimate.

Why do the formulas disagree?

Each was derived from different populations and eras. The spread between them is normal — aim for the middle of the range.
