Countdown to a Date

The Countdown to a Date calculator shows exactly how much time separates a target date from a reference date — down to the day. Set the target and the calculator reports the total days, the years/months/days breakdown and the equivalent weeks and hours. If the target is in the past, it reports the time since instead.

What this means

A countdown measures the interval between two dates in whole days and breaks it into full years, months and remaining days. It works in both directions: a future target counts down, while a past target counts how long ago the event was.

How we calculate it

Formula

Days = target date − reference date (midnights crossed). Breakdown = full years, then months, then days.

Worked example

From August 9, 2026 to December 31, 2026:

  1. 1Days between = 144
  2. 2Breakdown: 4 months, 22 days
  3. 3Weeks = 144 ÷ 7 ≈ 20.6

Important assumptions

  • Counts are date-based (midnight to midnight); hours and minutes are not part of the inputs.
  • The reference date defaults to the date shown — set it to today's date for a live countdown.

Frequently asked questions

Does the countdown include today?

Days are counted from the day after the reference date to the target date, so today to tomorrow is 1 day and today to today is 0 days.

What if the target date is in the past?

The calculator switches to a 'time since' view and reports how long ago the date was, with the same days and years/months/days breakdown.
